When Tennessee Aggressive Driving Turns into Road Rage
While any instance of aggressive driving can end in injury or even death, the most serious form of this dangerous behavior is known in the United States as road rage. The difference in the two lies in the outcome of the dispute between two drivers. Road rage usually ends in an extreme act of aggression that often includes physical assault.
All human beings experience a great variety of emotions. And one of the most dangerous of these emotions is anger, sometimes followed by aggression. Road rage is, simply, acting on the anger and intentionally, often severely, harming another person or his property.
When highways got more crowded in the 1980s, road rage began to be a common occurrence. Shootings, stabbings, ramming – you name it – have all happened on our roads.
Unofficial numbers indicate that at least 1,200 road rage deaths occur each year. In an American Automobile Association (AAA) study of 526 motorists, almost 90% had experienced road rage incidents the preceding year. And 60% said they had lost their tempers while driving in the same 12-month time period.
If you find yourself getting stressed out behind the wheel, the AAA suggests that you can reduce these feelings by:
- Planning your trip ahead of time, including an alternate route.
- Making sure your car is in good condition, including tires, windshield wipers and brakes.
- Being sure you are comfortable by adjusting the seat, mirrors and head restraints.
- Take frequent breaks on long trips and try to eat in quiet places.
- Develop a calm attitude about heavy, congested traffic, and take time to relax before you get behind the wheel.
