Two Killed in Tipton County Car Crash

A mother and her grown daughter are dead after a two-car accident on U.S. 51 in Brighton.

The Tennessee highway accident happened on Friday, January 4, 2013, at about 1:15 p.m. Sixty-two-year-old Sherry Claffey, of Atoka, was headed south in the right lane of U.S. 51 when her Ford Explorer struck the rear right corner of a Toyota RAV4 in the left lane. Both vehicles spun out of control and off the road.

The RAV4 hit a pole and broke it in two. The vehicle then rolled over, landing on its roof. The Explorer stopped in a ditch by the right side of the road.

The occupants of the RAV4, 47-year-old Shelly Harvey and her mother, 70-year-old Peggy Harvey, both of Munford, were ejected from the vehicle. Both women died at the scene from injuries sustained during the accident. According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Lieutenant Kevin Williams, there was too much damage to the vehicle to know whether or not the women were wearing seat belts.

Sherry Claffey was injured in the crash and was taken to the hospital where she was treated and released.

The accident is under investigation. Brighton residents said that accidents are a frequent occurrence on Highway 51 and believe that drivers take the curve too fast.

Peggy Harvey was a retired clothing department associate at Wal-Mart. Her daughter Shelly Harvey was a sales associate at Wal-Mart. Peggy Harvey is survived by two sons and two grandchildren.

The Memphis accident attorneys at Bailey & Greer would like to offer our thoughts and condolences to the Harvey family.
