Negative Side Effects of Transvaginal Mesh Patches
An article published in May 2011 in the New England Journal of Medicine studied the negative side effects associated with the transvaginal mesh patch. The study compared the effectiveness of the patch against the traditional treatment of using connective tissue in the vaginal wall. The study revealed that the patch had higher risk of harm or defect, including:
- Seven times greater risk of bladder perforation
- Almost double the risk of urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)
- 3.2% of women needed follow-up surgery to correct problems
