Memphis Motorcycle Accidents: Why do they Keep Happening?
Recently in Memphis, a motorcycle rider tragically died on Interstate 40. This accident happened around 8:45 pm and according to police reports, the motorcyclist was speeding when a car cut him off. The biker hit the left front portion of the car and was thrown from his motorcycle. Unfortunately, he ultimately died before making it to the hospital for treatment. Why do we highlight this heartbreaking case? Because it is a rather eye-opening illustration as to how the lack of visibility and other factors pose great risks for motorcycle riders, who are simply looking to enjoy their bike and the seemingly endless Tennessee roads.
Tragically, accidents like these are not uncommon in Tennessee and unfortunately, happen on a regular basis. While motorcycles may have a performance advantage on the road because of their small size, they also undoubtedly have a distinct safety disadvantage – and, for many reasons. Accordingly, the following are a few of the most common ways in which motorcycle accidents occur:
- Visibility. Although it is convenient to pass cars, share lanes, and squeeze through spaces where a car or truck would never fit, oftentimes other motorists do not see motorcycles because they simply aren’t visible enough until it is too late. In fact, lack of visibility is one of the main reasons why the majority of motorcycle accidents occur in Tennessee and the nation as a whole. Although great for saving time and money, riding a motorcycle on a busy road, especially at night as in the above example, can be deadly, especially since it can be a challenge for other drivers to readily see them.
- Failing to follow the rules of the road. As evident from the above story, speeding is another main reason why motorcyclists often end up hurt and even killed in accidents with other vehicles. Moreover, accidents are also likely when motorcyclists haphazardly weave in and out of lanes or drive on the side of the road rather than following other cars as they are supposed to.
- Lack of skill and experience. Another reason motorcycle accidents occur is because many riders do not realize the additional skills involved in riding a motorcycle. There are a number of additional skills associated with riding a motorcycle as opposed to driving a car. Motorcycles handle much differently than cars. Specifically, they accelerate much faster, in most cases, than cars and trucks do. Riders also need a good sense of balance to successfully navigate on a motorcycle. Without sufficient training and experience, riding a motorcycle can be challenging, potentially dangerous and even fatal. Training and experience will improve your ability to ride and make good decisions that ensure your safety.
- Hazardous road conditions. Sometimes, riders are unsure or unaware of road conditions that can present a number of challenges for motorcycles to safely maneuver. For instance, pot holes, worn pavement, inclement weather and road construction can make biking a rather dangerous endeavor, which can result in serious and sometimes life-threatening accidents.
