Memphis Motorcycle Accident Attorneys Discuss the Dangers of Animals in the Roadway
The temperatures have not been quite as warm lately as they were during the summer, but most motorcycle riders have not put their bikes away for the season just yet. There are still plenty of beautiful fall days ahead, and many riders have plans to ride for as long as they can, until snow or extreme cold brings riding season to an end.
Unfortunately for riders, fall is a particularly dangerous time of year to be riding down the road on a motorcycle because there is an increased risk of hitting an animal. As the weather gets colder and the seasons change, animals of all kinds are on the move. Riders should use extra caution as they navigate the roads, because while some animals are bigger than others, a motorcycle-animal collision of any kind can be dangerous, or even deadly.
A recent motorcycle accident in Obion County claimed the life of one motorcycle rider after he hit a deer that was standing in the road. Motorcycle accidents involving deer can be life threatening, but not all have fatal consequences. While this particular accident happened after dark, around eight in the evening, it is possible for deer to be present in the roadway at any time of day, especially around dawn and dusk. Use extra caution when riding through areas where there are open fields, because these areas are often heavily populated with deer. If you see a deer in the road while you are riding, slow down, and do not swerve. Not only is swerving dangerous, as it can cause you to lose control of your bike, it may not help you to avoid the deer because they can change direction quickly and without warning, especially when they are frightened. As you slow down, look for other deer that may be near the road, as they often travel in groups.
Deer are not the only animals that could be crossing or standing in the road as you are riding through. Dogs often stray into the road, especially in rural areas where they are more likely to be roaming about freely. Braking is the best way to avoid hitting a dog that is in front of your motorcycle, but dogs may present a danger to you when they are not in front of your motorcycle, too. Some dogs like to chase motorcycles, which is dangerous for both the rider and the dog. Speeding up is a common and effective tactic to get away from a dog that is chasing a motorcycle, but be sure that it is safe to do so before taking off. When you ride in rural areas, be on the lookout for farm animals, as they sometimes get loose. At times, they may be crossing the road in a herd, when the farmer is moving them from one location to another. The best way to avoid hitting farm animals, whether there is one of them or a whole herd, is to slow down.
