Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak at a Memphis 24-Hour Fitness
The Health Department confirmed an outbreak of Legionnaires' Disease at the 24-Hour Fitness club located on Ridgeway Road in East Memphis. Legionnaires' disease, which is also called legionellosis, is a bacterial disease that breeds in aquatic settings, such as spas, hot-tubs, and pools. Legionnaires disease usually develops in large buildings such as hotels, cruise ships, hospitals, and fitness centers because they have complex water systems. If not promptly treated, victims can suffer from respiratory failure, septic shock, kidney failure and death. 24-Hour Fitness has closed down the "wet areas," which include the steam room and pool.
