Latest Southern Tennessee Traffic Fatality Makes Three in Three Days
A Tennessee fatal accident near Iron City took the lives of two men on June 7, 2012. According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Officers, Stacey O. Short, 38, of Iron City, and Jayson L. Bechtold, 36, who lived just outside Iron City, were both killed in a one-car accident – the third fatal wreck in the area in just three days.
Just two days earlier, a Lawrence County accident claimed the life of a Mount Pleasant teenager; the day before, a Franklin County woman died on Alabama 13.
Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers reported that the accident occurred on Tennessee 227, also known as the Iron City Road. This route connects Iron City and St. Joseph.
The accident report states that the 1995 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Short was traveling east on Tennessee 227 when it came out of a curve, ran off the north side of the road and skidded 15-25 feet, slamming into a railroad trestle. Both Short and Bechtold, his passenger, were pinned inside the truck.
Short and Bechtold were pronounced dead at the scene. Bechtold formerly lived in Greenhill near the Tennessee/Alabama state line on Lauderdale 130.
Trooper Cody Allen was in charge of the investigation of the accident. He was assisted for several hours at the scene of the wreck by the Tennessee Highway Patrol crash reconstruction team.
The third traffic accident involving fatality in as many days simply adds to the toll. So far this year, there have been 19 roadway deaths in the region including northwest Alabama and southern Tennessee in Wayne and Lawrence Counties.
