Hyundai and Kia Recall 1.9 Million Vehicles

Hyundai and Kia are recalling almost 1.9 million vehicles to repair faulty brake light switches that can cause a host of electrical systems to fail and for side air bags that can cause injuries.

The brake light switch can turn on and off due to defective electrical contacts, which can then cause the failure of vehicle systems that rely on the brake light signal. These systems include the push-button ignition, the shift-lock system that prevents moving the shifter from park, cruise control and warning lights from the stability-control system. It also can cause the brake lights to illuminate without the pedal being applied.

The recall covers nearly1.9 million vehicles. Hyundai models affected by the brake light switch recall include the 2007 to 2009 Accent and Tucson, the 2007 to 2010 Elantra, the 2011 Sonata, the 2007 to 2011 Santa Fe, the 2008 to 2009 Veracruz and the 2010 to 2011 Genesis Coupe. Kia models affected include the 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, 2007 Sedona, 2007-2011 Sorento, 2010-2011 Soul and 2011 Optima. Kia is a subsidiary of Hyundai.

Hyundai dealers will replace the light switches starting in June when parts become available. Kia dealers do not yet have a confirmed date for parts, according to the filings.

In addition, almost 195,000 model year 2011-2013 Elantras are being recalled to repair a side-curtain air bag support bracket that can pop out and injure occupants during a collision. Dealers will make the repairs beginning in May.
