Honda Recalls 182,000 Vehicles

American Honda announced that it will recall more than 182,000 Hondas and Acuras for possible brake malfunctions caused by problems in the vehicles’ electronic stability control systems.

The recall applies to 101,000 Honda Pilots, 60,000 Acura MDX SUVs and 21,000 Acura RL sedans from the 2005 model year and approximately 800 Acura MDX SUVs from the 2006 model year.

The recall stems from a glitch in the company’s Vehicle Stability Assist ("VSA") system, a computerized system that selectively applies braking power to each wheel when the computer detects a loss of traction. Honda said that problems with the VSA system could cause the car’s brakes to suddenly be applied "without any input from the driver." And if the driver then applies the brakes, "the amount of brake force applied could exceed the driver’s intended input." In either case, unexpected brake activation could increase the risk of a crash.

Honda has received a number of complaints about such braking malfunctions in these recalled vehicles but no reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Honda will notify owners of affected vehicles by mail in mid-April. In addition, you can determine if your vehicle needs repair by going to www.recalls.honda.com or www.recalls.acura.com, or by calling (800) 999-1009 for Honda or (800) 382-2238 for Acura and selecting option 4. If your vehicle is affected, Honda encourages you to take it to an authorized Memphis area Honda dealer for your free repair as soon as you receive notification of the recall.

If you are injured in a crash related to faulty brakes in an affected model year Honda or Acura vehicle, call your Tennessee auto accident attorneys for a free consultation.
