The Trauma of a Head-On Car Crash
A head-on traffic collision is one of the most traumatic and frightening types of roadway accidents a person can experience. Not only are the injured parties likely to see the inevitability of the accident as it unfolds, but they also face some of the most serious injuries of any type of vehicle accident.
Why head-on crashes occur
Head-on car crashes occur when the front ends of two or more vehicles collide into one another while traveling in opposite directions. They generally involve some form of lane departure, where one vehicle enters into the opposite lane of traffic. These accidents can occur under a number of unfortunate circumstances, but the most common conditions include:
- Wrong way ramp entry. Head-on collisions often occur when drivers mistakenly attempt to use an entry ramp to exit a roadway. If another car is attempting to enter the roadway at the same time, the fronts of the vehicles may collide with one another.
- One-way street errors. In areas where roads are designated for one direction of traffic, drivers may become confused and drive down the road in the wrong direction.
- Undivided, two-way roadway crashes. Roadways can be particularly dangerous when they accommodate multiple directions of traffic. The risk is even greater when there are no dividers or medians to prevent drivers from crossing over into oncoming traffic.
- Distracted driving. Distracted drivers may drift into oncoming lanes of traffic while texting on a cell phone or engaging in some other distracting behavior.
- Poor roadway conditions. From icy roads and other types of bad weather conditions, to road construction with poor redirection efforts, roadway conditions can cause a driver to enter the opposite direction of traffic.
Head-on collisions often result in severe injuries
Head-on collisions often prove fatal. Survivors of these tragic accidents are often left with severe, life-changing injuries. Factors like vehicle speed and safety belts play a part in the types of resulting injuries, which may include:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Lacerations
- Internal injuries
- Facial disfigurement
- Airbag injuries
- Neck, back, and spine damage
- Damage to the mouth and teeth
