The scope of the problem of nursing home abuse and neglect

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA), at least one in 10 – and perhaps as many as one in six – older adults will suffer some form of elder abuse. Per NCEA, “Studies have recognized that projections of abuse likely underestimate the actual population prevalence. For every incident of abuse reported to authorities, nearly 24 additional cases remain undetected.”

Much of this abuse occurs in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. In 2021, there were 3,090 complaints of abuse or neglect in Tennessee’s long-term care facilities, and 62% of those complaints involved nursing homes. In fact, 94.6% of all nursing homes in Tennessee received at least one complaint.
