The Pain of Tennessee DUI Accidents: One Victim Works to Help Others
In 1971, Millie Webb and her family were in their car on Memorial Day weekend when a drunk driver hit them. The flames of the fiery crash claimed the lives of her four-year-old daughter and 19-month-old nephew. The baby she was carrying at the time was born two months premature and is legally blind as a result of the horrific Tennessee drunk driving accident.
In addition, Millie suffered burns on over 75% of her body, and her husband “remained in the car as it toppled over and got out with his bare hands and suffered burns over 45% of his body as he used his hands to extinguish our flames.”
Most people might just give up and succumb to depression. But not Millie. She has spent years working to prevent future DUI crashes and help the victims of these senseless crimes to regain their lives. She has served as the national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, worked hard to get the legal BAC limit for DUI lowered to .08 in Tennessee, and regularly speaks to others about her experience.
According to Millie, “The most frequently committed violent crime in America [is] drunk driving [which] is 100% preventable. That’s why it’s so hard for victims, she said. “We can’t change the past, but we can do everything in our power to keep it from happening to someone else.”
And this brave woman follows up her words with action. One man who heard her speak said, “I had the unfortunate chance of meeting Millie one night. I was convicted of DUI and I had to attend a meeting to hear two people speak about how people that drive while intoxicated had changed their lives. Millie was one of those speakers . . . I do not drink and drive any more.”
If you or a loved one has suffered loss because a drunk driver made all the wrong choices, you do not have to suffer alone. Organizations like MADD and others lend a helping hand. You should also consider contacting a Tennessee auto accident attorney to explore your legal rights.
