Toyota Recalls Affect Prius

This past Wednesday, Toyota announced a major recall affecting approximately 670,000 of their popular Prius hybrid cars.  The recall was attributed to defective steering components and water pumps, which could lead to an inability to steer the car or causing the car to stall.

While the steering issues will usually not result in a complete loss of steering, if the steering wheel is held completely to the right or left, loss of steering may result.  Based on the nature of a hybrid car, the water pump plays an important role in keeping the cars hybrid system and batteries the appropriate temperature.  If the water pump malfunctions, the powertrain could shut down and stall the car.

Although the latest model of the Prius is not effected, all Priuses built from August 2003 through March 2009 are effected.  There have not yet been reports of injuries associated with these recalls, but the news is disturbing considering the controversy Toyota recently went through concerning their vehicles suddenly accelerating.

Toyota’s sudden acceleration issues have resulted in numerous wrongful death lawsuits, and most recently, a $25.5 million lawsuit settlement with U.S. shareholders.
