Mattress Manufacturer Recalls 1500 Mattresses

A Georgia mattress manufacturer has issued a recall for 1500 mattresses sold in Georgia and surrounding states after the mattresses failed to meet federal flammability standards.  American Mattress Company, an Atlanta company, manufactures renovated, or rebuilt, twin, queen, and king size mattresses, and mattresses with built-in Bunkie boards.  The mattresses have a yellow tag that reads “American Mattress Mfg. Co., 1899 Metropolitan Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30315.”

American Mattress sold the noncompliant mattresses at Bren-Wil Mattress Wholesale, Millbrook, Ala.; A&R Furniture, Macon, Ga.; Ahnn’s Mattress, Hampton, Ga.; Blair Village Pawn Shop, Atlanta, Ga.; E&S Mattress Discount, Columbus, Ga.; General Furnishing, Loganville, Ga.; HRC Furniture, Jackson, Ga.; Mattress for Less, Macon, Ga.; Mattress 4 Sale, Riverdale and Forest Park, Ga.; Starlite Furnishing, Chamblee, Ga.;  and Mega Mattress Outlet, Jackson, Miss.,  from December 2010 through September 2011.  The mattresses range in price from $30 to $200.  Note that rebuilt mattresses with a federal tag which indicate that they meet the federal mattress flammability standard are not included in this recall.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) began investigating the company’s practices after CBS Atlanta did an undercover investigation that exposed the sale of flammable mattresses on Craigslist and other websites.  The used mattresses were stripped to the springs and rebuilt by American Mattress Manufacturing in a variety of fabrics and colors.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, as many 380 deaths each year are attributed to mattress/bedding fires.  Injuries and deaths from these types of fires are almost double those of other residential structure fires.  In 1973, the CPSC enacted the Federal Mattress Flammability Standard, which required mattresses to resist ignition from cigarettes or other small flames.  In spite of this legislation, mattress/bedding fires are still responsible for more than $104 million in property damage each year.  In 50% of cases, the fires are caused by children playing or smoking near the mattress.
