Fatal I-40 Church Bus Wreck Kills at Least 8, Injures Others
On the afternoon of October 2, 2013, a church bus traveling from North Carolina experienced a tire blow-out, which caused the bus to lose control, cross the median, and strike a tractor-trailer and SUV.
According to a spokesperson from the Tennessee Department of Safety, the crash killed a total of eight people–six passengers on the bus, the driver of the 18-wheeler, and one of the people in the SUV. Fourteen others were injured, with four being airlifted to east Tennessee hospitals and ten others taken by ambulance. The horrific crash occurred in Jefferson County, Tennessee, near the I-40/I-81 split.
After the tire blew, the bus reportedly crossed the median and struck the SUV and then slammed into the tractor-trailer, which immediately caught fire. The bus was carrying members of the Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville, N.C.
